Mapleview is committed to making responsible choices to benefit our community’s future. Our vision of providing our customers and retailers with the resources at the centre which allows them to recycle and support initiatives to maintain an overall sustainable life.
In 2024, as part of our commitment to sustainability, Mapleview installed two colonies of bees on the roof in collaboration with Humble Bee. Our rooftop beehives, housing over 60 thousand bees, contribute to increasing local honey production, flower pollination, environmental sustainability, and improving the overall health of our ecosystem.
Additionally, this initiative supports the Burlington Food Bank by donating a portion of the proceeds from our harvested honey.
Partnering with Micro Habitat, Mapleview’s rooftop is now home to an urban garden installed in May 2023. This sustainability initiative will contribute to reducing our environmental footprint and supporting local biodiversity.
The garden has vegetables, flowers and herbs planted to be harvested and cared for on a weekly basis from summer to fall. Items harvested weekly will be donated to Burlington Food Bank, as a way to give back to our local community. Mapleview is excited to see this garden grow & flourish.
This project also includes support for the Breakfast Club of Canada, by donating a portion of the proceeds from each urban farm developed.
Accredited by the BOMA BEST program, an organization that evaluates the environmental performance of building managers and operators, Mapleview Shopping Center has been implementing initiatives for several years with a goal of cardboard, glass and paper recycling rate of 75%.
Mapleview Shopping Centre is proud to be accredited BOMA Gold.
Mapleview Shopping Centre is home to a total of 19 electric vehicle charging stations.
EV charging stations
Mapleview is pleased to provide its patrons with three complementary electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in partnership with FLO. The three charging stations are located on the upper level on the east side of the building by the Mapleview Dental Office.
Tesla charging stations
16 Tesla superchargers are located on the West side of the building near the Shoppers Drug Mart entrance.
Mapleview has taken action to reduce our ecological footprint and we aim to continually improve our practices. To date, we have successfully reduced our energy usage through the use of LED lights. Mapleview has also been a hub of recycling activity for years, providing tenants and retailers an opportunity to recycle paper, cardboard, tin, glass, electronics, and organic waste.
Waste Reduction & Diversion
Through our efforts we have been able to save trees, reduce waste and maintain operational efficiency. Through composting and recycling, last year our centre has saved:
Water Refill Stations
In order to help reduce the consumption of plastic water bottles utilized, 2 water refill stations have been installed at Mapleview. Located on both the lower level near the washrooms and on the upper level near the Food Court, these stations have saved over 500,000 water bottles to date*.
